Breathwork, The Basics
-
Breathwork is simply breathing on purpose: working with the breath through different patterns, pace, and intensity to shift your state and how you experience your body. Some practices energize or focus; others make space for emotion to move. Either way, the goal is the same: connecting with the intelligence your body already holds.
About My Practice
Breathwork isn’t new, even if the word is. Cultures around the world have long practiced conscious breathing, and many still do, from pranayama in India and qigong in China to sacred practices within Indigenous communities. Western breathwork draws on these roots, alongside modern approaches.
I’m African American, Irish, and Italian. While I don’t carry a formal breath tradition, breath has always lived in the song and prayer of my lineage. I trained with Pause Breathwork and continue to learn from teachers who center this work’s roots.
My facilitation is trauma-informed. Participants set the pace, choose what to share, and can pause or opt out at any time. Experiences vary, and there’s no “right” outcome.
This isn’t therapy and isn’t a substitute for trauma treatment. For anyone navigating complex trauma, I encourage working with a licensed therapist alongside or before our sessions. I’m happy to talk through whether this is a good fit.

For groups moving through something together, whether that’s a coaching program, a training, or a season of real growth, breathwork does something few other practices can. People don’t just feel the benefits individually; they build a shared sense of trust and connection that’s hard to create any other way.
The quality of our life is linked to the quality of our breathing. It is the first and last sign of life. Our bodies handle breathing on their own, but when we breathe with intention, we can influence how we think, feel, and show up.
Common benefits include:
Immediate stress reduction and anxiety relief
More energy and mental clarity
A chance to connect with emotions and change how we respond to them
Release of stored tension and stress
Better access to intuition and inner clarity
In a group, these benefits build on each other.

Every body breathes, and with a brief medical disclosure beforehand, most people can take part at some level.
I work primarily with purpose-driven program leaders: anyone guiding a group through real change, whether that’s a coaching program with a clear focus, an ongoing training or educational series, or a group working through something together in a professional setting. If your role involves helping people take in an idea and carry it forward, this is built for you.
Participants don’t need prior experience with breathwork. This work meets people wherever they already are.

Every engagement starts with a conversation about your program: its goals, its timeline, and where participants tend to get stuck. From there, I design sessions placed where they’ll matter most.
Each session includes grounding, the guided breath practice, and time to integrate what came up, so the experience connects back to your program’s focus. The details (length, format, and rhythm) are shaped around your group.
Hi, I'm Vanessa.
I'm a breathwork facilitator and a learning designer, with over 20 years in learning design before breathwork ever entered the picture. That combination is why I do this work the way I do: I don't just guide breath, I understand how people actually take in an idea and carry it forward, or don't. I design every session around where your program already is, so the work compounds instead of just repeating what your participants already know.
I found breathwork by accident. One class woke something up in me I wasn't expecting, and my response was to do whatever I could to keep breathing on purpose. Within two years I received my Pause Breathwork certification, a trauma-informed approach to intentional breathing, trained to guide emotional release safely and support transformation through a gradual, integrative practice, not a single dramatic moment. Intensity does not equal transformation.
I'm not a glossy before-and-after story. I'm very much in the work of being human, same as the people in the programs I get to work with. For me, breathwork has been a space maker, a clearing out of unhelpful thoughts, a gentle nudge to the stuck parts that keep us disconnected from our joy, creativity, and purpose. I believe experiencing the best of ourselves, and connecting with each other, is how real progress happens. breathing on purpose is one path in that direction.
Curious how this could fit into your program?
